Helen May Mahar

1930-2021

Helen May Mahar

Helen May Mahar

May 7, 1930 - March 26, 2021

It is with sadness that the family of Helen Mahar advises you of her death, following a brief illness with cancer. She died peacefully at Valley Regional Hospital with her son and daughter at her side. Helen, born Helen Wilson, lived her whole life in the Annapolis Valley, raising her family and working at the Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital until her retirement.

She is survived by her son, Bill (Susan); and four daughters: Clara, Barb (Larry Wilson), Louise (Stephen Gessey), and Helen (Greg Young). She has a sister, Madeline Gowans; and two brothers, Joe and Norris Wilson, all living in Ontario. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Caitlin, Alyson, Andrew, Zenon, Shawn, Blair, Tammy, John, Shane, Nathan and Zack, as well as thirteen great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie "Lucky" Mahar.

Helen loved to play bingo and played darts for over thirty years. She has a cabinet of trophies of which she was incredibly proud. On Wednesday evenings, during Kinsmen TV Bingo, we would hear her yell, "I’m set", followed by, "Darn it!", when someone else won. Helen loved her family; her living room was lined with pictures of family members. In the last few years, she lived for her daily phone calls from her daughters and sister. She enjoyed visits with her family, especially when her great grandsons would crawl up on the couch and help her watch her team, the Blue Jays, play ball. Helen loved watching hockey and baseball and cheered on her teams, the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays at every opportunity. She will be missed.
