Susan Dawn "Suzy" Vanderhoning
1976-2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Susan "Suzy" Dawn Vanderhoning’s passing. Susan was born October 7, 1976 in Kentville, Nova Scotia to Andy and Ann (Swinamer) Vanderhoning. Susan passed away in Hamilton, Ontario on December 21, 2021. She attended Kings County Christian School and Central Kings Rural High School, Nova Scotia.
Susan was a mother first, and a friend to many. Her kids were her world, she travelled often to see her children in Alberta, especially for the birth of her granddaughter, Alanna, where she stayed a whole month. Once Alanna was born, she made it a daily occurrence to call and say hello, we already miss that so much.
Susan may have had two biological children, but she picked up many more throughout her life. Many times, you could find her babysitting for a friend that was more like family. Susan spent many evenings taking her kids to ringette, and other sports events, or going for drives with Tyler in his latest ride. She loved loud music, and everyone knew her by her blue Honda Civic.
Susan loved to help people in need. When she moved to Hamilton, she joined a church and spent many evenings out on the streets feeding the homeless. That was who she was, caring, compassionate, with a big heart.
Susan is survived by her son, Tyler Vanderhoning (Sara), Didsbury, AB; her daughter, Shelby Rodriguez (Michael), and her granddaughter Alanna whom was the light of her life; her Mom, Ann and stepfather, Shane Tracey, Murphy Lake, NS; and stepmother, Audrey Vanderhoning, Upper Dyke, NS; brothers, Rodney Vanderhoning (Adrienne), Fort St. John, BC; and Jason Vanderhoning (Tanya), Coldbrook, NS; stepbrother, Jody Tracey (Angie), Grand Prairie, AB; stepsisters, Taunya Tracey (Jason), Berwick, NS; Courtney Gillis (Jamie), Kentville, NS; Stacey VanBlarcom (Aaron), Kentville, NS; and Brittany MacKinnon (Nick), Moncton, NB; special aunt, Agnes Hazelwood (David), Aylesford, NS; and uncle, Doug Swinamer (Liz), Winnipeg, MB; as well as many nieces and nephews who were all loved and adored.
Susan is predeceased by her Dad, Andy Vanderhoning; paternal grandparents, Hank and May Vanderhoning; maternal grandparents Reginald and Effie Swinamer; as well as her namesake, her Aunt Susan Swinamer.
Susan had many mental health struggles, as her close family and friends knew, and anyone wishing to make a donation in her honour can do so by way of Open Arms where she spent time listening and encouraging others, or a charity of your choice.
