Catherine Jamieson (Dick) Porter

1937-2022

Catherine Jamieson (Dick) Porter

Porter, Catherine Jamieson (Dick), 84, Black River Lake, Kings Co., died on May 20, 2022 surrounded by family. Born in Halifax in 1937, Catherine was a first generation Canadian whose parents, Robert Pratt Dick and Janet McWhirter (Jamieson), separately emigrated from Scotland to Halifax in the early 1920’s where they met and later married and raised their two daughters, Grace Elizabeth (Henderson) and Catherine Jamieson. She is predeceased by her parents and sister.

In her younger years, Catherine was involved in the Girl Guides of Canada and was accomplished in amateur theatre where she met her husband, Murray Dean Porter. They moved to Kentville, NS in the early 1960’s and started their family, then moved to Newfoundland in 1975, returning to NS and the family cottage at Black River Lake in 1980. She was predeceased by her husband in 2011 and she continued to live at Black River Lake, a place she truly loved.

Catherine was kind and hospitable with a quick wit and dry humour. She was a lover of animals, an accomplished gardener, a great baker, an avid CBC Radio listener, and an unofficial Jeopardy champion, she also enjoyed books, music, and the arts. In the years when Black River Lake was a cottage the guest books were filled with the remembrances of parties and activities. Throughout the years it was a full-time home there were always friends of all ages dropping in for a visit. For Catherine it was the perfect spot on the lake and there was no need to go anywhere else.

Catherine is survived by her four children: Bradley (Mary), Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS; Loring (Colleen), Lake Placid, NY; Janet (Robert), Brechin, ON; and Alex (Tracey) and their daughter Iris, Isle Madame, NS; along with her many nieces and nephews. In her final hours each of her children was able to spend some private time with her.

Thank you to the many friends, neighbours, and providers who enabled Catherine to live exactly as she wanted at Black River Lake.
