KENNETH "Kenny" CRAMMOND BROWN

MAY 24th, 1949 – MAY 18th, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Crammond Brown on Wednesday May 18th. He passed away peacefully at home, with Carol, Ashley and KC at his side.

Born to parents Charles Kenneth Brown and Heather "Heddy" Brown in Three Rivers, Quebec. Kenny was the eldest of three children, big brother to Kevin and Karen. His early years were spent in Toronto. His formative years enjoyed in Montreal before eventually settling in Wolfville, Nova Scotia where he would plant his roots and raise a family of his own.

Throughout his life sports, exercise and going to the gym were part of daily routine. He was an accomplished hockey player. Recruited by the Halifax Jr. Canadians in 1966 as one of the top teenage defence men in the country. He was one of a small number of brother combinations to play for Acadia Axemen, and an even smaller group of former players who had their sons play for the team. He was First Team League All-Star with Acadia 1968-69, his first year. He played a pro year for Den Haag, Holland 1972-73 and played in the National University Final for Sir George Williams University 1973-74. He was later player coach at Bridgetown Hawks and then coach at Kentville Colonels. Hockey has been a constant throughout his life, from playing himself to supporting his son’s own hockey journey. Every winter without fail he built a backyard rink for his children and their friends to enjoy.

He married Carol Preston at their wonderful family cottage on Lake Huron in 1984. Soon followed the births of their children Ashley and KC, or as he might call them, Lady A & The Boo. The family spent many summers at the cottage on Lake Huron. Kenny considered his children his finest achievement. Ashley and KC treasure their childhood memories of their father. Multiple hockey trips with KC, complete with advice on his game. Or horse riding with Ashley, even though he was very much terrified of horses. He made it an occupation to rank movie theatres by the quality of their popcorn and rinks by the quality of their hot dogs. He always took great joy in embarrassing his children, prolonged honking of the car horn at school, a classic.

If given the chance, he would tell anyone prepared to listen about how much he loved his trip to Wales for Ashley and David’s wedding. As he often said, "it was the best week of my life." One might say, he thought of it as an Olympic occasion. In recent years, he lived for his two grandsons, John David (JD) and Jack Edwards. He loved to pick them up from school or day-care, colour and draw, make snow tunnels in winter and the three of them became quite the connoisseurs of all things cakes and ice cream. There were visits to Kingsport Beach, one his favourite spots, usually accompanied with a side of fries. JD and Jack provided Papi with entertainment and joy, to the very end. It is without surprise that he made a spectacular Grandfather.

He had an ability to engage with everyone. A fabulous listener with a marvellous sense of humour and extremely quick wit. He always found a way to share a joke and have a laugh, which was often punctuated with a pinch of sarcasm. He loved to play devil’s advocate, was a great storyteller. He was a genuine and generous friend with a big heart, who was hugely kind.

Kenny is survived and forever remembered by his family, Carol, Ashley, KC; his son in-law, David; and his grandsons, JD and Jack Edwards.

He will be sadly missed by his loving brother, Kevin (Linda); his sister Karen; and by his adoring nieces and nephew, Connor, Kerrigan, Hayden, Tarra, and Berkley.

"Now they have a lovely family, the finest in the land, as they’re stollin’ down Main Street, everybody shakes their hand" two lines from "Kings County Man" a song written about Kenny.
