1939-2023

Alta Marion (Taylor) Covert

Alta Marion (Taylor) Covert, age 83, of Kentville, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2023, in Wolfville Nursing Home, Wolfville. Born on September 8, 1939 in Middleton and raised in West Dalhousie, the second of five surviving children of the late Alton and Marion (Wright) Taylor. After graduating at the top of her class from Bridgetown Regional High School she became a secretary, working first at the Nova Scotia Sanitorium in Kentville, then the BFM Hospital, Kentville and finally in a doctors’ office, until retiring at 55. A woman of amazing determination, energy and strength, she was always working, and seemed to excel at everything she tried. In addition to her regular job, she built a side business doing fine upholstery for clients across the province. For many years she also did typing for a local doctor. She enjoyed entertaining, taking pride in setting a fine table and creating delicious meals for friends and family. She did not slow down in retirement. After moving to Annapolis Royal she became involved in the Clementsport Legion, where as caterer, she created weekly meals for large brunch and dinner crowds, and she advocated for seniors at the provincial and national levels as a representative of the Clementsport Good Neighbours Club. In 2005, she won the Remarkable Senior Award for Leadership from the province for her volunteering and work in the community. Alta loved dancing, camping, seeing new places, playing cards, reading, sewing, knitting and needlework. In retirement she became an amateur genealogist, spending several years researching her family history, and an avid gardener. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 63 years, Murray; children, Michael (Linda), Calgary, Alta.; Jerald (Deb), Devon, Alta.; Kimberlea and Brian, both of Ottawa, ON; and Kevin, Canning; three grandchildren, Weston (Megan), Nina (Steve) and Sarah (Nick), all of Calgary; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Finnley; as well as beloved sisters, Della and Nadine; brother, James; and many nieces and nephews.
