Marina Joan (Calkin) Weaver

1934-2023

Marina Joan (Calkin) Weaver

Marina Joan (Calkin) Weaver, of Wolfville, passed away in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Monday, February 27, 2023. Loving wife of Mac for 66 years; proud mother of Jeff (Colleen), Lynn (Rees) and Melanie; and doting grandmother to Stephen and Megan. Predeceased by her brother, Charles and parents, Mildred and Edmund.

Marina’s early schooling was in Welsford’s two-room schoolhouse with completion of high school in Berwick where she boarded with her Aunt Ermine and Uncle Boyd Burgess. She then moved to Kentville where she graduated from Mack Business College. Employment included work with the Apple Maggot Control Board, Province of Nova Scotia (Agriculture), and the widely acclaimed Integrated Pest Management Group of A.D. Pickett where she served as his Executive Secretary.

Married in 1956, Marina joined the Horticulture staff at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, soon after. Returning to Canada in 1959, homes included Harrow, St. Catharines, Fredericton, Kentville, Grand Pre, and Ottawa with retirement years seeing a return to Kentville and, finally, Wolfville.

Marina was an avid RVer, travelling to many points in Eastern Canada and the Atlantic seacoast states. She curled for many seasons at the Glooscap Curling Club in Kentville and was an avid bridge player. Marina enjoyed piano, listening to Southern Gospel and attending performances by the Gaithers and others.

Proud of her home, her recipe box is, indeed, a treasure. Her home was always elegantly furnished and hosted guests easily, with little notice.

Our thanks to the ER staff at the Valley Regional Hospital for their exceptional efforts on Marina’s behalf: Jo-Anne Merodin RN, Drs. McLeod and MacNeil, as well as the paramedic team.
