Gwendolyn Ida "Gwen" Ells

Gwendolyn Ida "Gwen" Ells, age 97, passed away peacefully in Valley Hospice, Kentville on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Born in West Paradise on April 20, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Eugene A. and Gwendoline (Cowd) Poole.

Mom resided in Greenwich for 73 years. She was happy that she was able to continue living in her home until just days before her passing. When her children were of school age, she entered the workforce, working many years in the insurance industry with Bevan & Wilson Insurance, and later McDonald Chisholm Insurance, Wolfville office. Mom had many interests and hobbies over the years including calligraphy, stamp collecting, reading, walking in the mall with her friends and doing the daily crossword puzzles and cryptoquote in the Chronicle Herald. Mom also worked for many years cleaning, sorting and cataloging stamps for the Annapolis Valley Stamp Club whose annual stamp show and sale supported charities such as the Flower Cart in New Minas and the IWK. She was a long-time member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Wolfville, a member of the ACW and served many years on the Sanctuary Guild.

Gwen is survived by her daughters, Catherine Fancy and Barbara Parsons; sons, Douglas (Pam), David, Donald (Carole); grandchildren, Kelly Lambert, Dawne Ells (Jeremy Spinney), Tony Parsons, Robyn Parsons (Dr. Barret Rush), Jonathan Ells, Jennifer Ells (Aaron Bishop). She also leaves behind her siblings, Mickey Murphy, Margaret Ashley and Pat Vartanian; 16 great grandchildren and a large extended family that all had a place in her heart.

Gwen was predeceased by her husband Glen Ells in 1989; sisters, Iris (Eben) Miller and Barbara (William) Jaques; brother, Fred (Charlotte) Allen; son-in-law, Don Fancy; nephew, Bill Jaques; nieces, Peggy Godsoe and Beverley Kingston.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 18, 2023 in St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville with reception to follow, The Reverend Nicole Uzans officiating. For those unable to attend, a video webcast of the service will be available on-line by Sunday, March 19. Interment will take place at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in Gwen’s memory may be made to the VON Annapolis Valley, Valley Hospice or a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
