Joan Marie (Grimm) Demings

Joan Marie (Grimm) Demings – age 91, of New Minas, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Aylesford, she was a daughter of the late MacKenzie and Ethel (Bond) Grimm.

Joan will be remembered for her quick wit, love of animals, especially her dogs, and her dedication to her pride and joy, her children. She was a devoted mother, participating in all of her kids’ activities, including tobogganing, skating, swimming, biking and playing ball when they were young, and supporting them throughout their lives with any help that she could offer. Joan was an exceptional seamstress, making many of her children’s clothing, as well as knitting sweaters, scarfs and mittens for many family and friends. She enjoyed crafts, especially rug hooking, crocheting and knitting. In her younger years, Joan worked at Simpsons-Sears, and made life-long friends that she kept regular contact with. Joan was artistic and enjoyed writing poetry and playing guitar. She loved music, especially the old country classics. Joan was a meticulous homemaker and made the best apple pie. Joan also enjoyed gardening and being in nature, watching the birds and feeding the wildlife.

Joan is survived by daughters, Tina DeWitt (Timothy Campbell), Lower Sackville; Tammy Demings (Joe Bishop), Aylesford Lake; son, MacKenzie Demings and his wife, Annette, Avonport; sisters, Patricia McBay, Berwick; and Joyce Vaughan, Hantsport; half-sister, Kay Bailey, Naples, FL; grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Shawna and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Alex, Jayde, Rylie, Owen, Hayden and Londyn; many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Alton Demings (2022); sister, Frances Barkhouse and half-sister, Freda Boudas.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Joan’s caregivers, Leona and Theresa for the exceptional care, compassion and love that they provided. You are truly our angels.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. A graveside service and celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the SPCA or Diabetes Canada. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
