James Alton "Jim" Taylor

James Alton "Jim" Taylor, 80, of Kentville passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.

Born in Digby, the son of the late Alton and Marion (Wright) Taylor, he is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Joan (Todd) Taylor, Kentville; son, Zachary (Tracy) Lower Sackville; daughter, Dana (Kevin) Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Quinn, James, Eric, Cylvia, his sister, Nadine, Milford, and many nieces and nephews.

After his parents, Jim is predeceased by sisters, Della, Alta, Vanta in infancy, brother, Douglas.

Raised in West Dalhousie, Jim went to school in Bridgetown and worked at the elastic plant in Centralea before attending Ottawa Technical in 1960, receiving his auto mechanic’s certificate.

He and Joan moved to Toronto in 1966 where he achieved his 3rd Class Stationary Engineering certificate and worked at the University of Toronto for 12 years. Returning to Nova Scotia in 1979, Jim worked at Acadia University for 17 years. In that time, he joined the New Minas Volunteer Fire Deptartment and later opened his own business, Jim’s Small Engine Service. Jim was also a dedicated Masonic member, becoming Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge Kentville #58 AF & AM in 1993. Hunting with his buddies and fishing with his children and father-in-law, Howard Todd, were what brought him great joy. Jim also treasured rare adventures to tropical destinations like Barbados, Florida, and Cuba with Joan as well as achieving his dream of going to Nashville.

Services will be held in the White Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024 with the funeral service being held on Saturday, May 11th at 2:00 p.m. A private family burial will be in the Oakhill Cemetery, Annapolis at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Oakhill Cemetery, c/o Margaret Mailman, Treasurer, 37 Hillside Dr., Lequille, NS B0S 1A0. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
