Johan Tertius Booysen, 75, was surrounded by his wife and children as he returned home to be with the Lord on the morning of July 26, 2024; comforted knowing that "where two or three are gathered together in His name, there He is in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20).

Born in Benoni, South Africa, he was the only child of Jan Johnathan and Johanna Susanna (Esterhuyse) Booysen. Johan dedicated his life to his family and to his career as a physician, specializing in radiology. He was a loyal husband, father, and friend. A man of deep faith, Johan often prayed with family, friends, and colleagues, and in quiet moments of the day, turned his face to the Saviour when his heart was in need of comfort.

Never one to rest, Johan lived with intention, valuing hard work and perseverance. He dearly wished to provide his children with the best opportunities he could. The family immigrated to Canada from South Africa in 1990, settling in the small, friendly community of Stephenville, Newfoundland. Johan worked at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital for nine years after which he relocated to Gander while his family moved to Nova Scotia allowing his children to be united as they pursued their own individual studies. Johan was grateful to be entrusted with the opportunity to practice medicine in Canada and worked tirelessly to honour the trust that the community bestowed in him.

Johan reluctantly retired after 23 years at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, Newfoundland. He spent his last year in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, alongside his beloved wife. In his retirement, his love of learning turned to experimenting with bread baking, particularly sourdough, making rusks (a traditional South African hard bread), making kefir, yogurt, and kombucha. Johan was often engrossed in learning about new cultures, politics, and religion, and relished sharing his newly acquired knowledge.

Johan will be dearly missed by his wife, Ettje (Niehof); children, Lynette Ina (Steve) Milley, Miranda Laetitia Booysen, and Johan Gerhard Booysen. He was predeceased by his parents.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks of appreciation to the First Responders, the doctors, nurses and staff of Valley Regional Hospital, particularly those in ER, ICU and surgical ward, for their exceptional care and compassion. Johan was so incredibly grateful and pleased with the treatment he received.

There will be no visitation, by request. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 2, 2024, in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, NS.
