James Manning "Jim" Messem

1951-2024

James Manning "Jim" Messem

James Manning Messem, better known as "Jim" and "Papa", of Greenwich, passed away in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the age of 72.

Born in Wolfville to the late Gordon and Ethel (Grant) Messem in 1951, Jim spent his life in the Annapolis Valley. He wore many hats over the years. He and Pat moved to Pereau in 1994, where he owned and operated the Pereau General Store for 21 years (the store that was well known for their very BIG ice creams). Prior to the store, the family lived in Port Williams for 29 years where Jim worked on Ells farm, which was later Mic Mac Processing. He was a member of the Port Williams Fire Department, including Chief for the final, 13 years of his 30 years as a member. He really enjoyed attending Fire Chiefs Conventions in various locations. Jim, Pat and family would spend many weekends travelling the province, camping while Jim played many softball tournaments.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Patricia "Pat" (Sawler); children, Laura (Robert) Walsh, Kim (Mike) Mason, and Michael (Brandy) Messem; six grandchildren, Owen Caborn, Alexandra Messem, Tyra and Keana Walsh and Kate and Zack Mason; sister, Ruth Arenburg; beloved dog, Bailey and many extended family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Audrey Griffin and Sharon Hubley; brother David; half-sister, Shirley LaChance; nephew, Christopher Arenburg and niece Karen Messem.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Lee and the entire staff of the ICU, at Valley Regional Hospital. Your compassion and care for not only Jim, but all of us did not go unnoticed. Thank you does not seem adequate enough.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request.
