Anthony "Tony" Droste Northey

1942-2024

Anthony "Tony" Droste Northey

Anthony "Tony" Droste Northey died peacefully in his sleep during the early hours of December 1, 2024.

Tony was born in Washington D.C. and spent his childhood between the United States and Germany. He began his long life in academia with his degrees at McGill and Queen’s Universities, which led to a long career as a tenured professor at Acadia University. His doctorate work focused on the life of Franz Kafka, who remained the subject of his intellectual passions, leading to the publication of numerous articles and a book, Kafka’s Mischpoche.

In his early twenties, Tony married Andrea, who shared his life for more than sixty years. Two sons, Robert and Charles, quickly arrived. After growing up primarily in urban centres, the Northey family moved to rural Nova Scotia, where Tony remained rooted the rest of his life. As his sons began to leave the home, Tony and Andrea began some fostering, and their chosen daughter, Jennie, was added to the family. Also joining the family was daughter-in-law Melanie, married to Charles, and their daughter Cosima. Soon after came Jennie’s daughter Shelby. Tony’s life as husband, father, and grandfather was where he found the most joy in his life.

Tony is also survived by his sister, Isabella (Tasillo) and nephews Michael and Thomas. Tony and Andrea have also had the constant support of Andrea’s brother Stefan and his family.

While Tony was both a skeptic and cynic by disposition, he would joyfully espouse his thoughts and opinions to his many friends during long conversations, preferably at the family cottage, over a barbeque dinner and a beer.  He will be deeply missed by all.

A celebration of Tony's life will be held on Thursday, April 24th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the K.C. Irving Center, 32 University Avenue, Wolfville, NS.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
