Barbara I. Smith

Barbara Smith – 96 of Kentville, passed peacefully away Thursday, April 10, 2025. She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Dorothy (Sangster) Walsh. Barb was predeceased by her husband, Jared Smith, Prince William, New Brunswick of 61 years.

She will be missed and remembered by her brother, Ken Walsh, Bellingham, Washington, US; her sons, Ken (Lynne), Bridgewater; Doug (Sheila), Annapolis Royal; Fred (Debbie), Dawson Creek, BC; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Barb was raised on a farm in Hemmingford, Quebec, which in the 1920’s was one of several in the area used as locations for rum running operations bordering the US border. She attended Hemmingford Intermediate School, followed by Sherbrook High School. She then began 1st year science at McGill University and then transferred to MacDonald College to pursue a Bachelor in Home Economics Degree, where she met Jared. They were married within a few months and lived in Ottawa prior to moving to Kentville due to Jared’s work in the poultry industry.

Barb was a stay-at-home mom but kept busy volunteering in the church and the hospital while raising three sons. She initiated the free wig program for cancer patients in Kentville which ended up serving Nova Scotia and beyond. After Jared’s retirement, they spent 20 years wintering in Arizona.

Barb’s family will receive relatives and friends from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025. For those unable to attend, a video of the service will be available. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Kentville Baptist Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
