Dr. Andrew "Peter" Booth
1939-2026
Dr. Andrew "Peter" Booth – 87, of Berwick, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Hamilton, ON, May 20, 1939, son of the late Andrew and Hazel (Baker) Booth. Peter attended McMaster University and was granted the B.A. Degree in Latin and French and went on to study Theology at Knox Presbyterian College in Toronto. He served three summers as student minister in Alberta and Manitoba but interrupted these studies to take a position as a lecturer in Classics at Acadia University, vacated by his former teacher. He never returned to theology but remained in this position for almost forty years. Leaves and sabbaticals permitted graduate work: an M.A. in Latin at McMaster, an M.A. in Greek at the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. at Dalhousie. The department expanded its offerings to include Ancient Literatures in Translation, Art, Religion, and Mythology, and this latter became Peter’s special interest. Interactions with his students was characterized by patience, his love for his subject and his lively sense of humor. He also enjoyed theatre and participated in Kipawo Theatre in Wolfville and CentreStage in Kentville. Throughout his time at Acadia he performed in many roles, such as that of Elwood P. Dowd with Chérie Zinck in the production of Harvey and as Norman Thayer with Diana Bishop in the production of On Golden Pond. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Anthea; his ex-wife, Moira and his brother, William "Bill". He is survived by his daughters, Amy (the late Terrance King) and Claire (Kirk VanBlarcom); granddaughter, Tessa King; grandsons, Brendon and Declan King; and sister-in-law, Renate Booth. Inspired by the Nova Scotia landscape he painted in watercolor. We are very grateful to the management and staff of the Orchard Villa West in Berwick for their care for Peter during his last years. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket Ontario. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
