The family of Gordon Whiteway is saddened to announce his passing on June 10, 2026 as result of a stroke. He was the son of Foster Gordon Whiteway and Lillian (Cohoon) (Whiteway) Kendrick. Born in Shelburne, he lived in Port Williams for his early school years, then moved to Wolfville, where he also went to Acadia University, and graduated with Bachelors of Science and Education.
Gord taught Mathematics at Kings County Academy for 31 years in the same classroom. He enjoyed his teaching, but was also a coach in hockey, softball and other sports. He also loved to go camping with his family – favorite spots were Keji and Risser’s Beach. In retirement, he continued to participate in volleyball, golf and curling, as well as watching Acadia Hockey games, and local baseball. He was active in Kinsmen and K-40 clubs, as well as the United Churches – St. Paul and St. Stephen in Kentville and Orchard Valley in New Minas.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Roy) (they would have been married 60 years on June 24 of this year); daughter, Angela; son, Michael (Sonya Fraser); grandchildren, Sophie and Owen Whiteway; brothers, Herbert, David, Patrick; sister, Beatrice; in his mother’s second family, Ralph Kendrick and Joyce (Kendrick) Nickerson; and many nieces and nephews.
Gord was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, tutor and friend to many. He was always ready to talk sports, especially about the Toronto Maple Leafs. "Maybe next year!" Was one of his favorite sayings at the end of the season.
Cremation has taken place. The memorial service (with livestream), followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026 in the Orchard Valley United Church, New Minas. Reverend Don Sellsted and Reverend Doctor Linda Marcotte officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Orchard Valley United Church, Diabetes Canada or a charity of your choice.
