Jean Edmonds Hancock

1946-2026

Jean Edmonds Hancock

Jean Edmonds Hancock, (Heanie) 80, of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, passed away on June 12, 2026, at the Valley Regional Hospital after a short illness.

She was born to the late Margaret Edmonds and Timothy Edmonds, on January 12, 1946.

She studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and was awarded both a Canadian Hallmark scholarship and a Memorial scholarship. She also received a grant which allowed her to continue her studies at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art under the instruction of artist Arthur Lismer, member of the Canadian Group of Seven.

Jean won many awards and illustrated many publications during her long career. She was one of twenty artists chosen in 1978 by the Canadian Confederation of Bishops to illustrate the first Roman Catholic Prayer Book printed in Canada.

In 1987, she was represented in the CBC Canada Day Film "Painting in Canada".

Jean has had hundreds of exhibitions of her work and has taught art to many painting groups and individuals.

Jean is survived by her two children: James Mark Hancock and Sheri Jean Hancock, and three grandchildren Emma and Georgia Hancock and Sofia Tomek.

Jean was constantly creating. She was a mentor to many young artists and generously donated her art to a multitude of benefits. She loved going to flea markets and thrift stores and searching for objects to turn into wonderful creations. Her home was filled with art. She loved her home and rarely wanted to leave it in her later years.
