Alice Irene Porter – 98, of Canning, passed away, surrounded by
her family, Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special
Care, Kentville. Born on March 22, 1910 in Greenwich, Kings County,
she was the eldest daughter of the late Archibald and Frances (Harvey)
Hatchard. She was a member of the Canning United Baptist Church for
over 50 years and a life member of the Women’s Missionary
Society. She graduated from Normal College in Truro in 1931 with a
Teaching Diploma. She upgraded her teaching license in the early
1960’s, attaining a Level 5 Certificate. Teaching and family
were her life. She taught in various schools in Kings County for 29
years. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Clyde Randolph Porter;
her son, Clyde Randall Porter; sisters, Eileen (Hatchard) Cohoon and
Madeline Hatchard; brothers, George Hatchard, Clark Hatchard and Harry
Hatchard; a son-in-law, Vaughn Beal. She is survived by a daughter,
Janet Beal, Brantford, Ontario; a son, Terry (Gloria) Porter, Canning;
brothers, Leon (Florence) Hatchard, Moncton; Ira (Joyce) Yakima,
Washington, USA; daughter-in-law, Emeline Porter, New Minas;
grandchildren, Greg (Chris) Beal, Gary (Kelly) Beal, Carol Lee
(Gordon) Elliot, Shelley Porter, Lori (Rob) Porter-Sherrard, Lisa
(Cory) Porter-Dowd, Jody (Wendy) Porter and Vicki (Amanda) Porter;
great grandchildren, Cameron Elliot, Alex Porter-Muntz, Laura
Porter-Muntz, Jamie Porter-Sherrard, Owen Porter-Sherrard, Alexa
Porter-Dowd, Kalle Porter, Dylan Porter, Michael Beal, David Beal and
Tyler Beal. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, November 23,
2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service,
followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November
24, 2008 in the Canning United Baptist Church, Reverend Murray Shaw
and Reverend Phil Locke officiating. A private family burial will take
place in the Jaw Bone Corner Cemetery, Canard. Family flowers only, by
request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canning United Baptist
Church, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
