Mrs. Mildred Alice Levy
Mildred Alice (Illsley) Levy - 98, formerly of New Minas, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Ross Corner, Kings County, on May 9, 1911, she was the eldest daughter of the late Harley and Minnie (Dennison) Illsley. Mildred taught school for 35 years in Hants and Kings Counties, spending 18 of those years at Kings County Academy, where she taught Grade II. She was a member of Ross Corner Baptist Church from 1925-1952, Kentville Baptist Church from 1952-1966 and New Minas Baptist Church from 1966 until her death. She was also a Dominion Life member of the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Union and World member of Women’s Christian Temperance Union, also a 50-year Jewel member of St. Eulalie Rebekah Lodge, Kentville (60 years in 2006), an Alumni of the Nova Scotia Teachers College, Truro, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Nova Scotia Teachers Union, Canadian Red Cross, Minas 50-Plus Seniors Club and various church organizations. An avid reader, especially of Christian books, Mildred was also interested in travel, poetry, attending hymn sings and making scrapbooks. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Sheldon; brother, Averd; sisters, Hilda Levy and Lucy Harris; nephew, Lorimer Veinotte; niece, Carolyn (Veinotte) Graves Coyle; stepsons, Victor Levy, Vincent Jackson and his wife, Hilda. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Raymond Harris, Truro; nephews, Leslie (Eleanor) Sanford and Harley (Carol) Sanford; nieces, Sandra (Wayne) Purcell and Rosalie (Veinotte) Holmes; step-daughter, Joyce Smith; step-daughter-in-law, Myra Levy; step-grandsons, Ken (Linda) Levy, David (Sheila) Levy, Larry (Janice) Jackson and Paul (Sandra) Jackson; step-granddaughters, Linda Jackson, Marlene Smith and Marjorie Waye; many great and great great step-grandchildren; special friends Andy and Linda Cann. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2010, with a St. Eulalie Rebekah Lodge service to be held at 7:00 p.m., both in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the celebration of her life, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2010, Reverend Doctor Robert Knowles and Reverend Sterling Gosman officiating. Burial will take place in the Greenfield Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the New Minas Baptist Church or the Valley Regional Hospital. Special thanks to Evergreen Home for Special Care for the excellent care and compassion received by Mildred during her time there. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
