Herbert Anthony Vandertoorn

Herbert Anthony Vandertoorn - 81, of New Minas, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Holland on November 8, 1932, he was a son of the late Cornelius and Petronella Vandertoorn. He immigrated to Canada in 1952, arriving at Pier 21, Halifax and became a Canadian Citizen on November 8, 1967. He had been employed as an Electrical Engineer with the Port of Halifax for 35 years. Herbert was a member of the Wolfville and District Lions Club, the Silver and Gold Seniors Club in Wolfville and the 50-Plus Seniors Club in New Minas. He loved to bowl and spent many summers at the campground. He is survived by his wife, Marley (Hinch) (Whitehead); six step-daughters, Sandra, Darlene, Mary, Karine, Elizabeth and Tammy; a step-son, Artie; two brothers, Michael (Shirley) and their children, Angela and Michael; Casey (Renda) and their children, Jason and Darrin; four nieces, Traise, Kelly, Lisa and Maryann; a nephew, Tim (Joan); 10 great nieces and nephews. In addition  to his parents, he was predeceased by a step-daughter, Valerie; a step-grandson, Nathan; his first wife, Bernice. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robert Burbidge and Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will take place in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Donations in memory may be made to the Wolfville Ridge United Baptist Church or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
